Religion
The subject is taught at all levels in the school. It is compulsory for each student. There were 5 teachers timetabled to teach religion in the past academic session. There is one class period allocated to first year students, two to second third, fifth and sixth year students. Students taking the Leaving Cert Applied course do not take religion as a subject. Classes are taught at a mixed ability level. A resource area is available in the department where DVD, books and other additional material are available. Religion is not taken at as an exam subject at Junior or Senior cycle at the school
At junior cycle, all students complete the relevant Junior Certificate syllabus. First years study the situation of Faith today, the Beginnings of Faith, Communities of Faith, Sources of Evidence, Communities at work, the World of Ritual. Second Years study Sources of Morality, Community, the Growth of Faith, the Expression of Faith, Sign and Symbol, Rites of Passage and other Rituals, the Experience of Worship, Growing in Morality, Organisation and Leadership in Communities of Faith. Third years study Challenges to Faith, Worship as response to Mystery, Prayer, Religious Morality in Action, Law and Morality, Relationships between Communities of Faith, Development of Tradition, Tradition, Faith and Practice today.
Students cover a number of topics in fifth year religion. The issue of morality, alcohol, drugs and war are covered. Teaching methodologies include group discussions, case studies, fact sheets and DVD’s to highlight and promote thought on various topics.. The event was a major success and raised €360 for the cause. Students also study human rights, media, cults, positive visualization and affirmations.
Sixth Year study a number of moral issues as well as on-going personal faith development. Students also do comprehensive work in preparation for their graduation.
